Free Tickets to the Late Show with David Letterman
I get a lot of questions about David Letterman tickets.
Here are a few interesting things you should know about his show:
- He films 5 shows per week in New York City. He takes Fridays off, so usually the show tapes once Monday through Wednesday and twice on Friday.
- Like all the late night talk shows – it is taped in the late afternoon and shown later that evening or the next day (ever wonder why it is daytime when they go out on the street?)
- All of the shows take about a hour to an hour and half to record, and the studios are often cold – so bring an extra layer.
- Tickets for David Letterman are in high demand, so don’t be surprised if you are unable to attend.
- You cannot buy tickets for David Letterman. They are 100% free from CBS, and anyone selling them is a fraud as the tickets are non-transferable. (They are in your specific name and you have to bring ID.)
- You must be 18 or older to attend.
- You can only request 2 tickets (unless you are a very large group – 10 to 20.)
- There are 4 ways to get tickets: Online Form, In Person Request, Group Tickets, and Stand By. A link to them all can be found below.
- Last thing – David Letterman wants his fans to attend, so he makes them answer a trivia question before qualifying for tickets. Be ready – an incorrect answer disqualifies you from tickets!
Because the information changes frequently, I thought it would be best to direct you to the website for more info:

One last tip: I have seen David Letterman several times. The first time they called to confirm and ask the trivia question, I almost had a heart attack! They used to ask 3 questions and you had to get one correct. Now it is much tougher – one question - one answer! If you know someone who is a regular fan of Letterman (watches it several times per week) put their phone number on your form. Still make all the other information correct and give your friend a heads up. Anyone who watches the show regularly would easily be able to answer the questions. For example, where is Dave’s mom from?
If you said Indiana you would have 2 tickets. Any other answer gets you a polite decline.
Good luck and enjoy!
